The Historic Achievement of the Netball Teams of Union College

The under 15, 17 and 19 netball teams of J/ Union College have become champions in the divisional, zonal and district levels.

The Jaffna District Netball Tournament was held at Uduvil Girls College on the 16th and 17th of April 2009. The three teams (Under 15, 17, and 19) of Union College, which took part in the tournament, became champions Jaffna District.

It is remarkable that these teams became champions at the Divisional and Zonal level Netball tournaments as well.

The historic achievement of the three teams is a result of the guidance and training given by Mrs. Jeyanthi Jeyatharan, the Coach. Given the difficulties resulting from the location of the playground in the High Security Zone Mrs. Jeyatharan’s role in training and guiding the teams is deserves our congratulations.

Calling these victories “a historic achievement,” Mr. Punniyaseelan, Principal, Union College, congratulated and thanked everyone who worked hard for the successful performance of the teams.

In the meantime, students of Union College have made achievements in other competitions as well:

Tamil Language Day Competitions (National Level) – 2008
Paa Othal – Group IV – Suntharamoorthy Thasangan – 1st Place
(The above competitions were held in Colombo last month)

Table Tennis (District Level) – 2009
Girls Under 19 – 2nd Place
Boys Under 19 – 3rd Place

The Deputy Principal of Union College informs us that the College has received sports instruments, which amount to the value of SLR 57, 170. 00 donated by the London Branch of the Union College Alumni Association.

யூனியன் கல்லூரியின் 15,17,19 வயதுப்பிரிவு வலைப்பந்து அணியினர் கோட்டமட்டம் வலையமட்டம் மாவட்டமட்டம் என்பனவற்றில் முதலிடத்தைப்பொற்று வரலாற்றுச்சாதனை படைத்துள்ளனர்.

யாழ் மாவட்ட பாடசாலைகளுக்கு இடையிலான மேற்ப்படி இறுதிப்போட்டிகள் இம்மாதம் 16,17ம் திகதிகளில் உடுவில் மகளீர் கல்லூரியில் இடம்பெற்றது. இப்போட்டிகளில் கலந்துகொன்ட இம் மூன்று அணிகளும் முதலிடத்தைப்பெற்றுக்கொன்டது.

ஏற்க்கனவே இடம்பெற்ற கோட்டமட்டம் மற்றும் வலையமட்ட போட்டிகளில் இம் மூன்று அணிகளும் முதல்இடத்தைப்பெற்றுக்கொன்டது என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

ஆசிரியை திருமதி ஜெயந்தி ஜெயதரனின் வழிகாட்டலாலும் திறமையான பயிற்ச்சியாலும் இவ் அணிகள் பெரும் சாதனையை நிகழத்தியுள்ளன.

மேறப்படி முடிகள் குறித்து கருத்து தெரிவித்த கல்லூரியின் அதிபர் திரு புண்னியசீலன் அவர்கள் எமது கல்லூரியின் மூன்று அணிகளும் ஒரே தடவையில் மாவட்டமட்டத்தில் முதல் இடத்தைப்பெற்றது ஒரு வரலாற்றுச்சாதனை எனவும் இதறக்காக கடுமையாக உழைத்த சகலருக்கும் தனது பாராட்டுக்களையும் நன்றிகளையும் தெரிவிப்பதாக குறிப்பிட்டார்.

இதேவேளை மேலும் சில போட்டிகளில் கலந்துகொன்ட யூனியன் கல்லூரி மாணவர்கள் தமது திறமைகளை வெளிப்படுத்தியுள்ளார்கள்.

இதேவேளை லன்டன் பழையமாணவர் சங்கத்தால் ரூபா 57170 பெறுமதியான விளையாட்டு உபகரனங்கள் யூனியன் கல்லூரிக்கு வழங்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும் இவற்றை தாம் தறப்பொழுது பெற்றுக்கொன்டுள்ளதாகவும் கல்லூரியின் பிரதியதிபர் திரு சன்முகேஸ்வரன் அவர்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளார்.
